In Nevada, every school must create a School Performance Plan each year. This plan focuses on three key areas: Student Success—ensuring students achieve their academic goals, Adult Learning—helping teachers and staff grow professionally, and Connectedness—fostering strong relationships among students, families, staff, and the community.

In Humboldt County School District (HCSD), we believe that students, staff, parents, and community members all support helping our schools grow and improve. Schools start by reviewing last year’s goals and gathering information from many sources to understand where improvements are needed in these three areas.  It’s also important to know that federal law requires each state to evaluate school performance. In Nevada, we use the Nevada School Performance Framework (NSPF), which gives every school a star rating from one to five stars. One star is the lowest, and five stars is the highest, providing a clear picture of how schools are doing and where they can grow.

In addition to providing schools with an annual star rating, Nevada’s school rating system is designed to identify schools in need of support, including those that are low-performing or have low-performing subgroups. The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) requires Nevada to have three levels of support, known as school designations: Comprehensive Support and Improvement (CSI), Targeted Support and Improvement (TSI), and Additional Targeted Support and Improvement (ATSI).  French Ford Middle School was designated as an Additional Targeted Support School based on 2023-2024 performance and growth data.

Schools ranked in the lowest 30 percent of public schools in the state for English learner achievement, as outlined in NRS 388.408, are required to include targeted goals and actions in their annual school performance plans to support these students.  French Ford Middle School has incorporated goals in its 2024-2025 SPP to address the English Learner Academic Achievement Plan.
